We broke the story ... Pippen smacked CBS, NBC, Arizona State University and others with a lawsuit last year ... claiming they all published stories that unfairly labelled him as a bankrupt ex-jock. Pippen wanted at least $1 MILLION from each outlet.
Now, CBS and NBC have filed new docs asking the judge to throw out the case ... claiming they felt comfortable publishing their stories because for years Pippen "was the focus of a steady drum beat of press coverage recounting his ongoing and, by his own account, increasingly dire financial circumstances."
In fact, the media outlets claim the former NBA star was quoted in a 2004 article about athletes with money problems ... saying, "You can wake up one day, and someone can decide to take everything you have."
NBC and CBS are adamant ... there was no malicious intent in reporting the bankruptcy stories ... and therefore they shouldn't have to pay Pippen a single cent.
Now, it's up to the judge to decide if the case should go forward. Stay tuned ...

Famed political activist Cornel West -- a frequent guest on "Real Time with Bill Maher" -- was arrested in NYC this morning for disorderly conduct ... TMZ has learned.
Cops tell TMZ ... West and approximately 30 others were arrested for blocking the entrance to a police station in Harlem during a protest.
According to RT.com, West and company were demonstrating against the New York Police Department’s continuing "Stop and Frisk" policy, claiming NYPD officers should NOT be able to search protesters without due cause.

Our photog spotted Bobby B leaving Hemingway's Lounge with his fiancée, Alicia Etheridge. He had nothing to say about the Whitney photo, but he was quite playful once he got inside his ride ... making all sorts of crazy faces for the camera.
As TMZ first reported, the casket photo of Whitney isn't sitting well with her family, who are "disgusted" and outraged by its publication.
And as we told you yesterday ... someone shopped the same photo to us 9 days ago ... but we passed.

Gallagher Suffers Heart Attack -- Hospitalized in Texas | TMZ.com
Watermelon-smashing comedy legend Gallagher is hospitalized in Texas tonight ... after suffering a heart attack at a bar moments before he was supposed to perform ... TMZ has learned.
65-year-old Gallagher was preparing to go on stage, when he began to experience intense chest pains. The owner of the club called 911 ... and emergency personnel responded to the scene and transported Gallagher to a nearby hospital.
Gallagher's manager tells TMZ ... the comic suffered a "mild to serious" heart attack and will remain in the hospital for the next couple of days while doctors try to figure out what's wrong with his ticker.
The incident occurred just one year after Gallagher collapsed on stage during a performance in Minnesota after suffering a "minor heart attack."

Lohan rolled over to Hilton's beach pad for a small shindig with some of Paris' close friends ... including her sister Nicky, actress Emma Roberts and "Inception" star Lukas Haas.
One source at the party tells us, "Everyone was so surprised when Lindsay walked in and we thought they didn’t get along. But they immediately gave each other a big hug."
The gang kicked it on the beach, in Paris' hot tub and later had a mini dance party ... but not once did anyone see Lindsay take a sip of alcohol.
We're told Paris is "very excited" about rekindling her friendship with Lohan ... adding, "She LOVED seeing her again."
